People and sin
Love, Air, Captain Cook (History), God
2. How do we find out about God?
John 1:18 "No one has ever seen God. The only Son, who is truly God and is closest to the Father, has shown us what God is like."
3. People cannot guess what God is like by themselves but need God to tell them what He is like?
1 Cor. 1:21 "God was wise and decided not to let the people of this world use their wisdom to learn about him. instead, God chose to save only those who believe the foolish message we preach."
4. Why can people not see God?
1 Timothy 6:16 "Only God lives for ever! And he lives in light that no one can come near. No human has ever seen God or ever can see him. God will be honoured, and his power will last for ever. Amen."
John 1:18 "No one has ever seen God. The only Son, who is
truly God and is closest to the Father, has shown us what God is like."
Hints About God
Hebrews 11:1, 3 "Faith makes us sure of what we hope for
and gives us proof of what we cannot see. It was their faith that made
our ancestors pleasing to God. Because of our faith, we know that the world
was made at God's command. We also know that what can be seen was made
out of what cannot be seen."
God Spoke
Hebrews 1:1-3 "Long ago in many ways and at many times God's
prophets spoke his message to our ancestors. But now at last God sent his
Son to bring his message to us. God created the universe by his Son, and
everything will some day belong to the Son. God's Son has all the brightness
of God's own glory and is like him in every way. By his own mighty word
he holds the universe together. After the Son had washed away our sins,
he sat down at the right side of the glorious God in heaven."
Jesus is God in Human Form
God came down to earth as Jesus. Thus Jesus was God in human
form.
John 14:6-11 "I am the way, the truth, and the life!" Jesus answered. "Without me, no one can go to the Father. If you had known me, you would have known the Father. But from now on, you do know him, and you have seen him."
Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father. That is all we need."
Jesus replied: Philip, I have been with you for a long time. Don't you know who I am? If you have seen me, you have seen the Father. How can you ask me to show you the Father? Don't you believe that I am one with the Father and that the Father is one with me? What I say is not said on my own. The Father who lives in me does these things. Have faith in me when I say that the Father is one with me and that I am one with the Father. Or else have faith in me simply because of the things I do."
Fact, Feelings and Faith.
James 2:19 "You surely believe there is only one God. That's
fine. Even demons believe this, and it makes them shake with fear."
Personal but everywhere
Psalm 145:18 " To our LORD, everything you do is kind and
thoughtful, and you are near to everyone whose prayers are sincere."
Psalm 90:2 "You have always been God! long before the birth of the mountains, even before you created the earth and the world."
Hebrews 4:13 "Nothing is hidden from God! He sees through everything, and we will have to tell him the truth."
Has all knowledge of everything
Romans 11:33-36 "Who can measure the wealth and wisdom and
knowledge of God? Who can understand his decisions or explain what he does?
"Has anyone known the thoughts of the Lord or given him advice?
Has anyone loaned something to the Lord that must be repaid?
"Everything comes from the Lord. All things were made because of
him and will return to him. Praise the Lord for ever! Amen."
Created and maintains everything in the Universe.
Acts 17:24-28 "This God made the world and everything in
it. He is Lord of heaven and earth, and he doesn't live in temples built
by human hands. He doesn't need help from anyone. He gives life, breath,
and everything else to all people. From one person God made all nations
who live on earth, and he decided when and where every nation would be.
God has done all this, so that we will look for him and reach out
and find him. He is not far from any of us, and he gives us the power to
live, to move, and to be who we are. "We are his children," just as some
of your poets have said"
Is loving but also just and holy
John 3:16 "God loved the people of this world so much that
he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal
life and never die."
Psalm 145:8-9 "You are merciful, LORD. You are kind and patient and always loving. You are good to everyone, and you take care of all your creation."
Revelation 15:3 "Lord God All-Powerful, you have done great and marvellous things.
You are the ruler of all nations, and you do what is right and fair.
Lord, who does not honour and praise your name?
You alone are holy, and all nations will come and worship you, because
you have shown that you judge with fairness."
The Son is God
John 20:28-29 "Thomas replied, "You are my Lord and my God!"
Jesus said, "Thomas, do you have faith because you have seen me?
The people who have faith in me without seeing me are the ones who are
really blessed!"
Titus 2:13 "We are filled with hope, as we wait for the glorious return of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ."
John 14:9 "Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, `Show us the Father'?"
Jesus replied: Philip, I have been with you for a long time. Don't you know who I am? If you have seen me, you have seen the Father. How can you ask me to show you the Father?"
John 5:18 "Now the leaders wanted to kill Jesus for two reasons.
First, he had broken the law of the Sabbath. But even worse, he had said
that God was his Father, which made him equal with God."
The Holy Spirit is God
Acts 5:3 "Peter said, "Why has Satan made you keep back
some of the money from the sale of the property? Why have you lied to the
Holy Spirit? The property was yours before you sold it, and even after
you sold it, the money was still yours. What made you do such a thing?
You didn't lie to people. You lied to God!"
1 Cor. 2:10-11 "God's Spirit has shown you everything. His Spirit finds out everything, even what is deep in the mind of God. You are the only one who knows what is in your own mind, and God's Spirit is the only one who knows what is in God's mind."
The three persons are distinctive
1 Peter 1:2 "God the Father decided to choose you as his people, and his Spirit has made you holy. You have obeyed Jesus Christ and are sprinkled with his blood. "(Father, Spirit, Son)
Hebrews 9:14 "How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!" NIV (Son, Spirit, Father)
2 Cor. 13:14 "I pray that the Lord Jesus Christ will bless you and be kind to you! May God bless you with his love, and may the Holy Spirit join all your hearts together. " (Son, Father, Spirit)
John 15:26 "I will send you the Spirit who comes from the Father and shows what is true. The Spirit will help you and will tell you about me." (Spirit, Father, Son)
Matt. 3:16-17 " So Jesus was baptised. And as soon as he came out of the water, the sky opened, and he saw the Spirit of God coming down on him like a dove. Then a voice from heaven said, "This is my own dear Son, and I am pleased with him." (Spirit, Son, Father)
Different roles within the Trinity
Unity within the Trinity
John 15:26 "I will send you the Spirit who comes from the
Father and shows what is true. The Spirit will help you and will tell you
about me. "Jesus is God.
Col. 2:9 "For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form" NIV
1 Cor. 8:6 "We have only one God, and he is the Father. He created everything, and we live for him. Jesus Christ is our only Lord. Everything was made by him, and by him life was given to us."
Phil. 2:6-11 "Christ was truly God. But he did not try to remain equal with God. He gave up everything and became a slave, when he became like one of us. Christ was humble. He obeyed God and even died on a cross. Then God gave Christ the highest place and honoured his name above all others. So at the name of Jesus everyone will bow down, those in heaven, on earth, and under the earth. And to the glory of God the Father everyone will openly agree, 'Jesus Christ is Lord!'"
Hebrews 1:1-3 "Long ago in many ways and at many times God's prophets spoke his message to our ancestors. But now at last God sent his Son to bring his message to us. God created the universe by his Son, and everything will some day belong to the Son. God's Son has all the brightness of God's own glory and is like him in every way. By his own mighty word he holds the universe together. After the Son had washed away our sins, he sat down at the right side of the glorious God in heaven."
Titus 2:13 "while we wait for the blessed hope - the glorious appearing of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ"
We are filled with hope, as we wait for the glorious return of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ."
Romans 10:9 "So you will be saved, if you say that God raised Jesus Christ from death, and if you believe this with all your heart."
Jesus humbles himself to the Father
1 Cor. 15:28 "After everything is under the power of God's
Son, he will put himself under the power of God, who put everything under
his Son's power. Then God will mean everything to everyone."
Luke 22:42 "Father, if you will, please don't make me suffer by having me drink from this cup. But do what you want, and not what I want."
His sinlessness
2 Cor. 5:21 "Christ never sinned! But God treated him as
a sinner, so that Christ could make us acceptable to God."
Hebrews 4:15 "Jesus understands every weakness of ours, because he was tempted in every way that we are. But he did not sin!"
1 Peter 2:22 "Christ did not sin or ever tell a lie."
Hebrews 5:7-8 "During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered"
John 1:14 "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."
The Word became a human being and lived here with us. We saw his true glory, the glory of the only Son of the Father. From him all the kindness and all the truth of God have come down to us.
1 John 4:1-2 "Dear friends, don't believe everyone who claims to have the Spirit of God. Test them all to find out if they really do come from God. Many false prophets have already gone out into the world, and you can know which ones come from God. His Spirit says that Jesus Christ had a truly human body.

Virgin Birth
Luke 1:26f "God sent the angel Gabriel to a virgin pledged
to be married to a man named Joseph. The angel said, "Greetings, you who
are highly favoured! The Lord is with you."
Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of
greeting this might be.
But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found
favour with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you
are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the
Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father
David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will
never end."
"How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?"
The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the
power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born
will be called the Son of God."
Romans 3:20 "God does not accept people simply because they
obey the Law. No, indeed! All the Law does is to point out our sin."
The death of Christ is a death for sin
Matthew 26:28 "This is my blood, and with it God makes his
agreement with you. It will be poured out, so that many people will have
their sins forgiven."
Romans 8:3 "The Law of Moses cannot do this, because our
selfish desires make the Law weak. But God set you free when he sent his
own Son to be like us sinners and to be a sacrifice for our sin. God used
Christ's body to condemn sin"
Jesus is man's representative
Mark 8:31 "Jesus began telling his disciples what would
happen to him. He said, "The nation's leaders, the chief priests, and the
teachers of the Law of Moses will make the Son of Man suffer terribly.
He will be rejected and killed, but three days later he will rise to life."
"

2 Corinthians 5:14 "We are ruled by Christ's love for us.
We are certain that if one person died for everyone else, then all of us
have died."

but a slave who will give his life to rescuer many people."
2 Corinthians 5:21 "Christ never sinned! But God treated him as a sinner, so that Christ could make us acceptable to God."

who is the Saviour of everyone, but especially of those who have faith.
That's why we work and struggle so hard."

Romans 10:9-10 "So you will be saved, if you say that God raised Jesus Christ from death, and if you believe this with all your heart. God will accept you and save you, if you truly believe this and tell it to others."
Atonement
1 Corinthians 5:7 "Get rid of the old yeast! Then you will
be like fresh bread made without yeast, and that is what you are. Our Passover
lamb is Christ, who has already been sacrificed."
Ephesians 5:2 "Let love be your guide. Christ loved us and offered his life for us as a sacrifice that pleases God."
1 Peter 1:18-19 "You were rescued from the useless way of life that you learnt from your ancestors. But you know that you were not rescued by such things as silver or gold that don't last for ever. You were rescued by the precious blood of Christ, that spotless and innocent lamb."
1 John 1:7 "But if we live in the light, as God does, we share in life with each other. And the blood of his Son Jesus washes all our sins away."
Man is put right with God (Justification and Reconciliation)
John 3:16 "God loved the people of this world so much that
he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal
life and never die."
Romans 3:24-26 "But God is really kind, and because of Jesus Christ, he freely accepts us and sets us free from our sins. God sent Christ to be our sacrifice. Christ offered his life's blood, so that by faith in him we could come to God. And God did this to show that in the past he was right to be patient and forgive sinners. This also shows that God is right when he accepts people who have faith in Jesus."
Romans 5:6-10 "Christ died for us at a time when we were
helpless and sinful. No one is really willing to die for an honest person,
though someone might be willing to die for a truly good person. But God
showed how much he loved us by having Christ die for us, even though we
were sinful. But there is more! Now that God has accepted us because Christ
sacrificed his life's blood, we will also be kept safe from God's anger.
Even when we were God's enemies, he made peace with us, because his Son
died for us. Yet something even greater than friendship is ours. Now that
we are at peace with God, we will be saved by his Son's life."
John 14:16-17 "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counsellor to be with you forever - the Spirit of truth."

God communicated through Prophets
1 Peter 1:10-12 "Some prophets told how kind God would be
to you, and they searched hard to find out more about the way you would
be saved. 11The Spirit of Christ was in them and was telling
them how Christ would suffer and would then be given great honour. So they
searched to find out exactly who Christ would be and when this would happen.
But they were told that they were serving you and not themselves. They
preached to you by the power of the Holy Spirit, who was sent from heaven.
And their message was only for you, even though angels would like to know
more about it."
2 Peter 1:20-21 "But you need to realise that no one alone can understand any of the prophecies in the Scriptures. The prophets did not think these things up on their own, but they were guided by the Spirit of God."
Revelations 1:1-2 "This is what God showed to Jesus Christ,
so that he could tell his servants what must happen soon. Christ then sent
his angel with the message to his servant John. And John told everything
that he had seen about God's message and about what Jesus Christ had said
and done."
Eyewitnesses writing about the events.
2 Peter 1:16 "When we told you about the power and the return
of our Lord Jesus Christ, we were not telling clever stories that someone
had made up. But with our own eyes we saw his true greatness"
Luke 2:51 "Jesus went back to Nazareth with his parents and obeyed them. His mother kept on thinking about all that had happened."
1 John 1:1-3 "The Word that gives life was from the beginning, and this is the one our message is about. Our ears have heard, our own eyes have seen, and our hands touched this Word. The one who gives life appeared! We saw it happen, and we are witnesses to what we have seen. Now we are telling you about this eternal life that was with the Father and appeared to us. We are telling you what we have seen and heard, so that you may share in this life with us. And we share in it with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ."
Research into the Facts
Luke 1:1-4 "Many people have tried to tell the story of
what God has done among us. They wrote what we had been told by the ones
who were there in the beginning and saw what happened. So I made a careful
study of everything and then decided to write and tell you exactly what
took place. Honourable Theophilus, I have done this to let you know if
what you have heard is true."
Jesus is the Word of God in the Flesh
John 1:1-3, 14 "In the beginning was the one who is called
the Word. The Word was with God and was truly God. From the very beginning
the Word was with God. And with this Word, God created all things. Nothing
was made without the Word. Everything that was created....The Word became
a human being and lived here with us. We saw his true glory, the glory
of the only Son of the Father. From him all the kindness and all the truth
of God have come down to us."
Is the Bible inspired?
Jeremiah 1:9 "Then the LORD reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, "Now, I have put my words in your mouth." NIV
2 Peter 3:15-16 "Don't forget that the Lord is patient because he wants people to be saved. This is also what our dear friend Paul said when he wrote you with the wisdom that God had given him. Paul talks about these same things in all his letters, but part of what he says is hard to understand. Some ignorant and unsteady people even destroy themselves by twisting what he said. They do the same thing with other Scriptures too." (Peter treats Paul's Writings as Scripture)
1 Cor. 2:12-13 "But God has given us his Spirit. That's why we don't think the same way that the people of this world think. That's also why we can recognize the blessings that God has given us.
Every word we speak was taught to us by God's Spirit, not by human wisdom. And this same Spirit helps us teach spiritual things to spiritual people.
2 Timothy 3:14-17 "Keep on being faithful to what you were taught and to what you believed. After all, you know who taught you these things. Since childhood, you have known the Holy Scriptures that are able to make you wise enough to have faith in Christ Jesus and be saved. Everything in the Scriptures is God's Word. All of it is useful for teaching and helping people and for correcting them and showing them how to live. The Scriptures train God's servants to do all kinds of good deeds."
1 Timothy 5:18 "It is just as the Scriptures say, 'Don't muzzle an ox when you are using it to grind grain.' You also know the saying, 'Workers are worth their pay.' " (This is a quote from Luke's Gospel.)
Writers reminded by the Holy Spirit
John 14:26 "But the Holy Spirit will come and help you,
because the Father will send the Spirit to take my place. The Spirit will
teach you everything and will remind you of what I said while I was with
you."
Acts 4:8 "Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit and told the nation's leaders and the elders:"
I Cor. 2:10 "God's Spirit has shown you everything. His Spirit finds out everything, even what is deep in the mind of God."
What is the Purpose of Scripture
John 20:30-31 "Jesus worked many other miracles for his
disciples, and not all of them are written in this book. But these are
written so that you will put your faith in Jesus as the Messiah and the
Son of God. If you have faith in him, you will have true life."
1 John 1:3-4 "We are telling you what we have seen and heard, so that you may share in this life with us. And we share in it with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. We are writing to tell you these things, because this makes us truly happy. God Is Light Jesus told us that God is light and doesn't have any darkness in him. Now we are telling you."
Hebrews 4:12-13 "What God has said is not only alive and active! It is sharper than any double-edged sword. His word can cut through our spirits and souls and through our joints and marrow, until it discovers the desires and thoughts of our hearts. Nothing is hidden from God! He sees through everything, and we will have to tell him the truth."
2 Tim. 3:14-17 "Keep on being faithful to what you were taught
and to what you believed. After all, you know who taught you these things.
Since childhood, you have known the Holy Scriptures that are able to make
you wise enough to have faith in Christ Jesus and be saved. Everything
in the Scriptures is God's Word. All of it is useful for teaching and helping
people and for correcting them and showing them how to live. The Scriptures
train God's servants to do all kinds of good deeds."
People were made in the image of God
Genesis 1:26-28 "Then God said, "Let us make man in our
image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and
the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over
all the creatures that move along the ground. So God created man in his
own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created
them. God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number;
fill the earth and subdue it."
Genesis 2:7 "the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being."
Psalm 8:4-6 "what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honour. You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet"
Image Damaged
Genesis 9:6 "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall
his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man."
James 3:9 "With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness"
Image restored in Jesus
Col. 1:15 "He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn
over all creation."
The image of God In Christians
Phil. 3:21 "who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body."
Ephesians 4:23-24 "to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness."
Col. 3:10 "and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator."
Man Sins
The Warning (Genesis 2-3)
2:15- 17 "The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."
Satan tempts
3:1-3 "Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?" The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.'"
Denial of God by Satan
3:4-5 "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."
Temptation of the fruit
3:6 "When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it."
The Fall
3:7 "Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.'
The Guilt of sin
3:8-11 "Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the
LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they
hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called
to the man, "Where are you?"
He answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid."
And he said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?"
Man suffers the consequence of Sin
3:16 "To the woman he said, "I will greatly increase your
pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your
desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you."
3:17-19 "To Adam he said, "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, 'You must not eat of it,' "Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; `for dust you are and to dust you will return."
3:22-23 "And the LORD God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever." So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken."
All people are spiritually dead, under Satan's dominion and control
and subject to God's wrath
and condemnation.
Romans 5:12 "Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned"
Ephesians 2:1-3 "As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath."
1 Kings 8:46 "When they sin against you - for there is no one who does not sin"
Apart from God, people are helpless and hopeless.
Romans 3:10-11 "As it is written: "There is no one righteous,
not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God."
Jer.17:9 "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?"
1 Cor. 15:22 "For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive."
